Restaurant credit card processing fees too high? What to check
If your restaurant's card processing bill feels too high, it usually comes from three places: tiered pricing that downgrades cards, tip adjustments and late batching that push transactions into pricier tiers, and small recurring junk fees. This page shows how to check each one on your own statement.

What's a normal effective rate for a restaurant?
Effective rate is total fees ÷ card sales. As a rough, typical estimate, many card-present restaurants land around 2.5–3.0% all-in; consistently above about 3% is worth a closer look. Your real number depends on card mix (rewards and business cards cost more), ticket size and pricing model.
Fees restaurants commonly overpay
- Tier downgrades. On tiered plans, the processor decides which cards are "qualified." Rewards cards, keyed entries and tip-adjusted transactions often get billed at mid- or non-qualified rates. Look for lines like "Mid-Qualified Surcharge" or "Non-Qualified Surcharge."
- Tips and late batching. When the final amount differs from the authorized amount, or batches settle late, some transactions can be downgraded. Batch daily and close tips promptly.
- Per-item fees on many small checks. A flat per-transaction fee adds up fast at high transaction counts.
- Junk fees. PCI non-compliance, statement, annual, batch and "regulatory compliance" fees are often removable on request.
- Terminal rentals on long leases that cost more than owning.
The usual fix is asking for interchange-plus pricing, which passes card-network costs through at cost with a disclosed markup. See interchange-plus vs flat rate vs tiered.

FAQ
Why are my restaurant's credit card fees so high?
Common causes are tiered pricing that downgrades rewards or tip-adjusted cards to costlier tiers, per-item fees on many small checks, and recurring junk fees such as PCI non-compliance, statement and annual fees. What effective rate should a restaurant pay?
As a typical estimate, many card-present restaurants pay around 2.5–3.0% of card sales all-in. Consistently above about 3% is worth reviewing. It varies with card mix, ticket size and pricing model.Do tips cause higher processing fees?
They can. On some plans, transactions whose final amount differs from the authorization, or that settle late, are downgraded to a higher-cost tier. Batch daily and close tips promptly.Do I have to switch processors to lower fees?
